Tomatito Sextet
Paloma Fantova, Dancer

March 11, 2014 | Tue at 8pm
Tickets: $49, $44, $39

Tomatito became a guitar sensation after being discovered playing clubs in Andalusia by Paco de Lucia. He won his first Grammy for a recording with Paco and the legendary singer, Cameron de la Isla. His acclaimed collaboration with jazz pianist Michel Camilo brought him to jazz festivals around the world, including to New York, yielding his second Grammy. His third Grammy came in 2013 for the album, Soy Flamenco, which will be featured at his Barclay concert. Tomatito is noted for his charismatic personality, his mastery of the compás, and an unrelenting commitment to flamenco's development, and thus his various musical collaborations and incorporation of jazz into some of his work.

He will be accompanied by a sextet of accomplished musicians and dancer, Paloma Fantova, who when very young was first identified by Antonio Canales as a major talent in her own right. This performance of the Tomatito Sextet is a West Coast debut.

Ballet Flamenco Eva Yerbabuena
Lluvia/Rain

March 15 -16, 2014 | Sat at 8pm; Sun at 3pm
Tickets: $49, $44, $39

Eva Yerbabuena is unquestionably one of the superstars of the flamenco world and a celebrity at the world's leading festivals like those of Jerez and Nimes. The New World Flamenco Festival welcomes her company in its Orange County premiere at the Barclay.

Created by Yerbabuena, a choreographer as well as the virtuoso dancer most people know, Lluvia, meaning Rain, is a full-evening flamenco drama featuring a cast of five dancers and an ensemble of superb musicians and singers.

Like flamenco itself, the production of Rain traverses an intense range of emotions. It begins with a somber street scene in which Yerbabuena and her dancers thread their way through an unseeing crowd conveying a mood of melancholy and isolation. It concludes with a blindingly passionate signature Soleá and an audience jolted into awareness of the great La Yerbabuena's magisterial qualities.

A major flamenco event. Don't miss it. Two performances only.

"She exposes a beauty in flamenco I doubt any had believed could exist."

"This young woman is touched by greatness." -The Times UK
"She has the kind of artistry that appears once in a generation, if at all."
- The Independent, UK

"Eva Yerbabuena is a visionary, magisterial dancer, whose effects go far beyond technique." - The Guardian, UK

About The New World Flamenco Festival

The festival presents flamenco dance, music, and song in celebration of the passion, power, and poetry of the flamenco traditions of Spain. All of the artists participating in the Festival carry forward the highest performance standards of flamenco dance and music.

The Festival premiered in 2001 at Irvine Barclay Theatre.
About The Artistic Director - Yaelisa

Yaelisa's choreography has been commissioned by several modern dance companies, including John Malashock & Company, Rose Polsky and Collage Dance Theatre. In 1995, she was one of 11 choreographers in Spain invited to present a piece at the prestigious Certamen de Coreografia in Madrid, and the only American choreographer chosen among them. In 1996, she returned to the U.S. where she continues to choreograph, develop and train dancers for her company, Caminos Flamencos. Creating innovative theatrical presentations has established her as a choreographer of merit; she is the recipient of an Emmy Award for Choreography in 1993 for the PBS program, Desde Cadiz a Sevilla, and a Choreography Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1996.
