Old Orange County CO Courthouse Presents “Orange County Circa 1889” a Photographic Retrospect of OC History

Published: 07/07/2014

(Santa Ana, Calif.) - Old Orange County Courthouse is pleased to present "Orange County Circa 1889," a collection of historic photographic work taken 125 years ago documenting the founding era of Orange County. The exhibit will be on display July 14 through October 10, 2014 with an opening reception held on Thursday, July 17 at 7 p.m.

In 1889, Orange County was striving to create an identity during a period of great change. After 20 years of struggle, residents had overwhelmingly voted in favor of separation from Los Angeles County to form California's 53rd and newest County. In agriculture, a recent blight in the local vineyards and improving railroad facilities prompted many farmers to turn to citrus. Competition between the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific railroads drove down transportation prices and lured thousands to Orange County in a period of unprecedented population and community growth. When Orange County was born the area was rural and the population was small, but big things were on the horizon.

Local historian Phil Brigandi will host the exhibition opening reception on July 17 and deliver a presentation that will tell the story of creating Orange County. The reception is free and open to the public. RSVP is requested by calling 714-973-6607 or by emailing oldcounty.courthouse@ocparks.com.

Take a step back in time 125 years ago to the days when Orange County was young and join the Old County Courthouse to experience "Orange County Circa 1889."
