Destination Irvine is committed to attracting visitors to Irvine, as well as ensuring professionals will be there to serve them well into the future. Demea Metcalf, director of sales at Destination Irvine, volunteered her time to serve as a judge in a presentation competition for high school students interested in careers in hospitality and tourism marketing.

The student competition was part of the 2017 DECA International Career Development Conference, held at the Anaheim Convention Center in April, in partnership with the Destination Marketing Association (DMA) of the West and DMA West Education & Research Foundation.

DECA is a non-profit international association of educators that helps to prepare emerging leaders and entrepreneurs from high schools and colleges around the globe for education and careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management. More than 15,000 high school students and 1,500 colleges students participated, honing 21st Century soft skills, widely sought after by employers.

Metcalf, and other industry professionals, evaluated student presentations based on their skills in critical thinking, communication, and creativity and innovation, as well as other performance indicators.

"I was completely wowed," Metcalf said. "Even the students who are still finding their footing in presenting have a unique vision. Each student presented a different approach to marketing and what it means to their generation. This Gen-Zed group is ready to make a difference in their world, both in the workplace and in the global marketplace."

The 2018 conference is scheduled to be held again in Anaheim.
