SANTA ANA, Calif. - Today, County of Orange officials, Bob Hope USO leadership and members of the military celebrate Veterans Day with the opening of the Bob Hope USO at John Wayne Airport (JWA).
For 73 years, USO centers have welcomed troops and their families at airports across the nation. That warm welcome is being extended for the very first time at Orange County's John Wayne Airport. The Grand Opening ceremony is scheduled for Monday, November 10 at 2 p.m. in the Airport's Terminal B, next to the baggage claim area on the Arrivals Level where the new USO facility is located.
The festivities include singing of the national anthem by Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Rebecca Lopez with musical accompaniment by the California Army National Guard's 40th Infantry Division Band from Joint Forces Training Base Los Alamitos. A ribbon cutting and tour of the USO Center, along with congratulatory remarks made by Chairman of the Orange County Board of Supervisors Shawn Nelson and Bob Hope USO Chairman Rear Admiral Steve Briggs, USN (ret).
The USO Center features a stocked canteen, movies, travel assistance and free Wi-Fi for members of the military and their guests.
"We are eager to welcome our armed service members to the first USO facility in Orange County since World War II," said Supervisor Shawn Nelson, Chairman of the Orange County Board of Supervisors. "It has been our pleasure to work with the Bob Hope USO to develop this terrific facility for the men and women who serve our country so bravely." The Airport is leasing the space to Bob Hope USO under a five-year agreement for $1 per year.
Service members and their families can now receive the USO hospitality at John Wayne Airport.
"With more than 20,000 military members passing through John Wayne Airport on orders each year, we are thrilled to have a Bob Hope USO Center in Orange County and extend our heartfelt thanks to the incredible leadership by the Board of Supervisors and John Wayne Airport for helping make it possible," said Bob Kurkjian, Executive Director of Bob Hope USO. "Whether it's by giving a service member some travel advice or providing them the hospitality the USO is famous for, we are looking forward to making their travels a little easier."
Construction of the Bob Hope USO at John Wayne Airport was made possible by sponsors who provided project support, pro-bono services and supplies. Snyder Langston led the effort and provided in-kind design-build services with project management by Butier Engineering, Inc. Many others contributed to the construction, furnishings and planning of the USO Center, which included the architectural services of Ware Malcomb.
"Snyder Langston has been proud to partner with John Wayne Airport and Bob Hope USO to make this project a reality," said John Rochford, President, Snyder Langston. "As a company, we feel strongly that supporting the Bob Hope USO is the best possible way to express our gratitude to our men and women in uniform."
The Bob Hope USO at John Wayne Airport is open 365 days per year from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Active and reserve members and their dependent family members are welcome, as well as military retirees on a space available basis.
