Thanksgiving Marines

The holidays are here and I must admit I have a love/hate relationship with this time of year. I start to stress out with the many tasks before me and then I catch myself and stop.  Stop to take a moment to remember what's truly important about Thanksgiving:  taking the time to pause and bask in the glow of all the reasons there are to be thankful.  This year I'm thankful to help in hosting a few good Marines this Thanksgiving at my sister's house.

We're participating in the 2013 Camp Pendleton Home Hospitality program, where we'll have two Marines in training join us in our Thanksgiving holiday. It's sure to be a wonderful day on many levels and it's this type of giving that gets me excited for the holiday season.

If you're interested in helping out the Marines, Irvine has a program to do just this.  The Irvine 2/11 Marine Adoption Committee provides charitable activities and support for the welfare of the United States Marines and their families assigned to Camp Pendleton, with special emphasis on the Marines and families of the 2nd Battalion, 11th Marines. Here are some of their upcoming holiday events:

Toy drive containers will be located in the lobbies of the Irvine Civic Center and Police Department and in the Orange County Great Park's Visitor Center. Toys will also be collected at the Joyful Jingles holiday concert on December 8 at the Irvine Barclay Theatre

On your next lunch break, take time to feed your soul as well.

Irvine Museum

Autumn Glory by Benjamin Brown

The Irvine Museum is a hidden treasure, tucked away in the heart of the city's business distict. Located on the first floor of the Airport Tower, the museum is home to an intimate collection of art that highlights the golden age of California Impressionism.

Autumn is the season of homecoming, so it's only fitting that the Irvine Museum's current exhibition is a collection of pieces that are returning after years of national touring.

California Impressionism: Selections from the Irvine Museum has brought the works of some of California's most iconic artists to art lovers from Washington to Florida. Now, some of the most popular works in the museum's collection are back home and on public display through January 9, 2014.

The Impressionist Movement was all about celebrating the unique light and vibrant color of the California landscape. It only takes a few minutes inside the Irvine Museum to be transported to the breathtaking High Sierra or the amber sunsets of the Laguna coastline.

These paintings also take you back in time, to  the unspoiled and undeveloped landscape of the Impressionist Period (1890-1930)

"Over a hundred years ago, the splendor of nature fascinated artists and compelled them to paint beautiful paintings," explains Joan Irvine Smith, Chairman of the Board of Directors. "As we view these rare and remarkable paintings, we are returned, all too briefly, to a time long ago when the land and its bounty were open and almost limitless."

The exhibit is manageable; easy to digest in a lunch hour. Yet it provides a refreshing reminder of California's natural beauty.

On Thursdays at 11:15am, the Irvine Museum offers a docent led tour of the exhibit. But even if your visit is self-guided, you'll get a taste of vintage California, long before steel and glass corporate buildings and multi-lane super highways.

There's also an adjacent bookstore in case you want to take a little bit of beauty home with you....
