OC Gay Men's Chorus - Jolly Holly Follies @ Irvine Barclay Dec 5th & 6th

Posted by: Terry Winkler
Posted on: Friday, Nov 28, 2014

I grew up singing.  My mom loved listening to Perry Como while in the kitchen and Frank Sinatra when in the living room. We danced and sang our hearts out together, full of the joy and silliness we shared in the privacy of our Corona del Mar home.  We'd go to the Balboa Bay Club to croon along with Les Brown and his Band of Renown. High school choral club was where I learned to harmonize, blending in my low Alto and enveloping myself in the sounds of 5 part harmonies.

Sunday evenings were reserved for watching the Lawrence Welk show, singing along with the gang and occasionally hopping up to dance the fox trot with my dad.

And we'd definitely make sure to be home on nights when big events like the Bing Crosby Christmas Special was on television.

The holidays always seem to bring back these fond memories.  This December 5th and 6th we have a rare treat to turn on the TV, adjust the antenna, and settle in for an old-fashioned holiday variety show!

Jolly Holly Follies

Well, not really. You have to drive to the Irvine Barclay Theater and go see Men Alive, the Orange County Gay Men's Chorus production of Jolly Holly Follies.  Some old fashioned fun with what I'm sure will have a unique twist. ;o)

Irvine Museum: Hit the Road!

Posted by: Ellen Bell

The current exhibit at the Irvine Museum takes you on  a road trip to some of the West's most scenic spots, without ever getting in your car.

Irvine Museum

Scenic View Ahead: The Westways Cover Art Program, 1928- 1981, is one of the largest exhibitions of works from the Westways cover art program ever mounted. Westways is the member magazine of the Automobile Club of Southern California.

The cover art program began in 1928, with the Auto Club commissioning paintings from major artists working in Southern California for the cover of each issue of its member magazine. With 55 artworks on view, The Irvine Museum's exhibition traces prominent styles of art through most of the twentieth century, such as California scene painting, Pop Art, and assemblage art.

Irvine Museum

Started in 1909, Westways was originally called Touring Topics. One of its early editors, Phil Townsend Hanna began the program to commission art in 1928.

His move reflected a shift in the magazine's content from automobile-related topics to a broader interest in cultural and recreational activities.

The magazine's covers were intended to mirror the breadth of interests and backgrounds of its readers, the Auto Club members.

Hanna wanted to encourage readers to explore the scenic wonders of the West. Some are less known...some are very familiar..

Irvine MuseumScenic View Ahead shows an evolution of artistic expression; from plein air to scenic watercolor to graphic design. As a result, visitors to the Irvine Museum are taken on an artistic and cultural journey through the region's history.

Oak Grill is a Breath of Fresh Air

Oak Grill  at Fashion Island is the perfect spot to celebrate the flavors of Autumn...

...California style.

Oak Grill

From the moment you arrive in Oak Grill's newly-designed dining room, you are reminded of the best of California. A wall of windows brings the outdoors inside, and there is a seamless transition from the warm, wood interior to the patio.

Orange County weather makes al-fresco dining a year-round treat, and Oak Grill is the perfect spot to bring out-of-town visitors who want to escape the chill back east.

Oak Grill

The tranquil greenery may set the scene, but it's the food that steals the show.

Fall fare leans heavily on traditional tastes, but the
Oak Grill seasonal menu is full of surprises. Familiar flavors are blended with unconventional ingredients, resulting in a collection of dishes that add a new twist to some old favorites.

Oak Grill Iceberg Wedge Salad

The Classic Iceberg Wedge Salad has the creamy, crunchy goodness of the traditional dish, but a relish of root vegetables, carrots and dates adds an unexpected sweetness.  Crispy bacon lardoons finish the salad, replacing the conventional topping of bacon bits.

Oak Grill Butternut Soup

The Butternut Squash and Candy Apple Soup feels like "Thanksgiving in one bite," says Executive Chef Marc Johnson. Banana bread croutons and a slight hint of curry bring a new taste to a classic seasonal dish.

Chef Johnson's menu comes from his imagination to the table.

Oak Grill Chef Marc Johnson

"I think about all the flavors in my head while creating a dish," said Johnson.  "It's as if I know what it will taste like even before I actually make it. It's like tuning an instrument.  You can hear the notes of a violin, but you need to perfect and refine it and put into harmony with other instruments before creating a symphony.  You don't want one loud note, just like you don't want one strong taste.  Some soups don't have enough acid.  You should always have some acidity to brighten up the dish. This dish has all the tastes of Autumn."

 Oak Grill Salmon

Chef Johnson uses all Fall ingredients for the Seared Atlantic Salmon, selecting winter vegetables like port braised cabbage to build the dish. The  home-made ravioli has cauliflower, celery root garlic and mascarpone cheese, goat cheese and parsley.

"Cauliflower is perfect for the ravioli because it makes a good farce, or stuffing," said Johnson. "The beauty of the dish is finished with the tri-colored cauliflower when served on the plate."

"This dish just cries out that fall is in the air."

Art Night at Springhill Suites, Irvine John Wayne Airport

art night

The Springhill Suites by Marriott near John Wayne Airport is striving to support art and art education in our community; on October 22, the hotel hosted 'Art Night', a customer event featuring local artist Sherry Lawler Sparks. With over 36 years as an artist, Sparks had been in association with prominent OC shows as well as having her work displayed at the Surf City Festival and at the Art Center Gallery in Huntington Beach.

Aside from the painting displays, guests also got to enjoy an assortment of Hors d'oeuvres, beer, wine, and refreshments. As well, guests could wind down a step further with a 5 minute relaxing chair massage provided by a local Chiropractic office.

Art education has been known to help young students in their academic and social development, thus the community service program Save Art! was created by Springhill Suites in cooperation with Fresh Artists to identify an underserved local public school to sponsor, using the Save Art! guidelines.

Until the evening of Tuesday December 2, 2014, Springhill Suites hotels are taking part in the community program, Save Art!  by sponsoring local, underfunded public schools; raising funds for art supplies to help support the school's art education programs. The Irvine John Wayne Airport Springhill Suites location is supporting Davis Elementary in Santa Ana, hotel guests and visitors can make a monetary donation to the hotel and at the conclusion of campaign, Springhill Suites will report the total amount raised, and art kits filled with classroom art supplies will be prepared by their partner, Fresh Artists and sent to hotels to deliver to David Elementary.
