Hello Kitty, My Melody, Keroppi, and all their Sanrio friends have taken over Irvine's Tanaka Farms and we couldn't be more happy about it. This year-long partnership begins with plenty of family-friendly, Sanrio-themed fun at the beloved Tanaka Farms Pumpkin Patch. At first thought, it might sound unconventional to partner a sustainable farm and these adorable, iconic characters but the hope is that it will help foster an interest in healthy eating and responsible farming in the thousands of families who visit the farm every year.
Those who have experienced the Tanaka Farms Pumpkin Patch in the past will be happy to discover a new and improved experience. Of course, there will still be wagon rides around the farm and opportunities for kids to pick their own carrots, onions, cilantro, and radishes but adorable Sanrio friends will be joining in on the fun and the photo op's abound. Acres of pumpkins in various shapes, shades, and sizes are waiting to be taken home. A corn maze and petting zoo filled with friendly farm animals round out the experience.
On weekends in October, the Fall Harvest Festival takes place, filled with a variety of kid-friendly games, crafts, and activities; duck-a-palooza or Sanrio Sand Art, anyone? The pumpkin cannon is sure to entertain the young as well as those of us who are still young at heart. If you are hungry, stop by the baked potato bar at the Tanaka Farms Grill but be sure to save room for churros or the fresh baked goods inside the new and improved farm stand. Special Sanrio-themed merchandise is also available for purchase at the stand but does sell out quickly so watch the Tanaka Farms website for updates regarding the stock.
Don't miss: The Sanrio Costume Contest on October 28th which will include appearances by Hello Kitty herself! She will be in her pumpkin costume posing for pictures between 1 and 4 PM.
Tanaka Farm's partnership with Sanrio will continue with the Christmas Tree Farm during the holiday season, strawberry picking in the spring, and a melon celebration in the summer. A Sanrio farming club designed to teach kids about farming is in the works.
The Tanaka Farms Pumpkin Patch is open from 9 AM to 6 PM daily through October 31st. Patch admission is $3. You can purchase an entry package which includes admission, a wagon ride, and the petting zoo for $10 per person. U-pick veggies are $2.99 per pound. Further pricing and information can be found on the Tanaka Farms website.
