Southern California’s San Diego and Los Angeles are one of the world's most touristy cities and for good reason. Visitors are enthralled with their symbolic sights. After all, isn’t that what a holiday is all about? Not so much, I think. Sure it’s fun to see Disneyland, Lego Land, Hollywood and Sea World, but there's a whole lot more to an area than mouse ears, tacos and fancy malls. Just a few miles down the road from either San Diego, Los Angeles or the John Wayne Airport is one of coolest hidden gems in the area, Irvine....More

7/9/2012 Diamonds abound at Hyatt Regency Irvine, Irvine, California
At first glance, it seems descriptions of Four Diamond hotels are all about numbers - number of suites, meeting rooms, restaurants, amenities, etc. Of course, these numbers are important, but I give more attention to qualitative attributes of such properties. A recent case in point was a stay at the Hyatt Regency Irvine in Southern California, the city's only Four Diamond hotel....More

6/22/2012 Mango Sticky Rice and Gewurztraminer Pairing
One of the great things about being a wine writer is that I get to discover the most interesting food and wine pairings in some of the most outstanding places in the world. Take one of the most uniquely elegant desserts around ...sticky rice with mango. It just happens to also be vegan and gluten-free. It's delicious served warm. The sticky, aromatic, sweet and slightly salty rice, drenched in coconut milk, and eaten in giant spoonful's with fragrant mango is a treat not to be missed. It pairs wonderfully with Gewurztraminer which displays summery notes of flowers, grapefruit and lychee. How did I learn that? Read on!...More

In an ideal world, every meetings destination would be blessed with Chicago's shopping, San Francisco's restaurants, the arts and culture of Washington, D.C. and the best theater Manhattan could offer-minus, of course, a few pesky nuisances (traffic and congestion, for example) that occasionally surface in such great cities.
